Best ad blocker

Here’s our favorite ad blocker:

1Blocker. This also functions as a tracker blocker.

Alternative option

uBlock Origin, an open-source ad blocker compatible with Chrome, Firefox, and other web browsers. (We don't recommend using Chrome or Firefox - see our web browser recommendations - but if you have to use Chrome, uBlock Origin appears to be a good choice for ad blocker.)

Notes

Until December 2021 our favorite ad blocker was Better, the Safari-compatible privacy tool made by Aral Balkan and Laura Kalbag at Small Technology Foundation. Aral shut down Better and posted this (Dec 16, 2021) to explain the closure: "My disenchantment with Apple has been a long time coming. ... This apple is rotten to its core and I’m done with it."
