Best alternatives to iTunes

As Apple’s platform decay continues, some users of iTunes - aka Music - are looking for alternatives. Here are some:

  • JRiver Media Center is a software application “for managing and playing your media,” including music and video.
  • Swinsian is a “music player for macOS with wide format support, folder watching, advanced tag editing and designed to be responsive even with the largest libraries.” (See also this 2015 post about someone who - even then - didn’t trust Apple and switched to Swinsian.)
  • Roon offers a music and media server, as well as an app to play the media from various devices around home.
  • Plex can also serve as a media server, including for a music library, as described in this Howtogeek post.
  • iMazing allows you to “freely move your music between your iOS device and your computer. Transfer your media files back and forth, without using iTunes.”
  • Rekordbox is a software tool for DJs, allowing them easy access to songs in multiple streaming platforms.
  • piCorePlayer describes itself as “Free software that plays local music as well as online music streaming services on a Raspberry Pi.”
